EDIT : Moved to tidy up the Solution.

This is simpler than the demo hack. Just go to your:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Monolith Productions\FEAR

folder and in there is a settings.cfg (will appear after you have loaded the game once). Just enter your desired rez and the game with set the FOV automatically.

Oh, and set the detail options before you set the new rez otherwise when you acept the settings you will revert back to the game set rez.

Could you explain "Oh, and set the detail options" ??

So I can add it here....

F.E.A.R. RETAIL VERSION WIDESCREEN HACK

You must start the game one time then save & exit & go into:

The file is found
My Computer > right mouse click > choose Explore > then go to
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Monolith Productions\FEAR

The file is named settings.cfg & is a size of 46kb open it with notepad or a suitable editor program &

then you scroll down until you see the following & this is where you change the setings to your requirements
then resave the file in the same folder.

(I changed it to 1920 X 1200)

"GammaB" "1.973183"
"GammaG" "1.973183"
"GammaR" "1.973183"
"BitDepth" "32"
"HardwareCursor" "1.000000"
"ScreenWidth" "1920"
"VSyncOnFlip" "1.000000"
"ScreenHeight" "1200"

THEN

If you go into the game and choose ... Options ... Display ... it will show up as 640x480 and then re-set it's self to this res. (So don't go into this option.)

If you go into the game and choose
... Options ... Performance ... Advanced Video Card Options ... Graphics ... it should show the 1920x1200 res in there ... second from
bottom.

i follow the instructions

"HardwareCursor" "1.000000"
"ScreenWidth" "1600"
"VSyncOnFlip" "1.000000"
"ScreenHeight" "1050"

& when i launch the game the resolution is 640x480.

You might want to try 1680 not 1600...

Also, don't go into the Display Options once you've set the res - only into Performance...

This worked great, thank you!

It would be nice if games were released with multi-monitor support. :D

You're welcome. :) It's amazing how easy it is for a single typo to screw everything up... ;)

Are you doing this ... ?

From the solution above ...
Quote:
If you go into the game and choose ... Options ... Display ... it will show up as 640x480 and then re-set it's self to this res. (So don't go into this option.)

Once you have set the res don't go here or it will reset itself.

I am doing the same thing as Than .. but every time I launch the game, it starts in 640x480. I have my monitor hooked up via DVI .. I doubt this *would cause the problem .. but more info anyways..

Someone suggesated 1280x768 and it works but my laptop can't handle F.E.A.R on such a high resolution :( .Any ideas for lower resolutions close to 800x600 but still widescreen?

Tried 1280*768, to no avail. I am running a 6800GT, with a Dell 2005FPW. I can get the game to run at 1024*768 (of course not WS), but when I change the INI, it reverts back to 640*480

Thrilla, I got a 2005fpw also, 1280x768 works fine for me, but you can't check display settings in game or it will revert back to 640x480. I tried many different resolutions like 1024x600, 1024x640, 960x640, 960x600, 720x480, 768x480, 800x480, and none worked. If your game starts up in 640x480 after the cfg change, try again. I don't know what to tell ya if it doesn't work, man.

settings.cfg

"BitDepth" "32"
"HardwareCursor" "1.000000"
"ScreenWidth" "1280"
"VSyncOnFlip" "0.000000"
"DeviceName" "\\.\DISPLAY1"
"ScreenHeight" "768"

Quite weird .. dunno why I can't use that resolution. If I set it to 1600*900, it works, without a problem.

Maybe the Nvidia drivers?
