I was observing the same thread, although in read only mode  Outcome would be very interesting, no doubt. Essentially, you always have those tiny winy technology bits which are usually hidden from the consumer eye. Apart from all that complexity and broad range of technologies involved in LCD screens, I guess that this is the another reason why LCD screens arena is so exciting

well I've spoken with Rasmus about this whole situation. He hasn't had chance to test the 2007WFP yet, but we've been going over the models discussed to try and observe a pattern of what is going on. The pattern which seems logical so far is:

Quote:
All TN panels = Dithering. Some are 6-bit with FRC, some are 6-bit extended to 9-bit and figure as 8-bit in the specs (or 16,7 mil. colours). More modern panels seem to be the latter, look for "16.7 million colours" quoted in specs.
PVA Traditional = 8-Bit
PVA + Overdrive = Dithering, 6-Bit +FRC
S-PVA + Overdrive = Still real 8-bit
MVA Traditional = 8-Bit
19" and below MVA + Overdrive = dithering, but not as obvious as with PVA + Overdrive
>19 inch MVA + Overdrive = real 8-bit
S-IPS Traditional = 8-Bit
New S-IPS panels + Overdrive = Dithering (inc the Dell 2007WFP)
AS-IPS = 8 bit, not heard any reports of colour issues on these

any thoughts?

Didn't have so much time lately to think about everything  Anyhow, I'm so tired of Samsung false advertising (viewing angles especially) and now this. I mean, OK if this is something that floats their boat, fine by me, but it's not fair. Surprising facts are on what development level is now software dithering control of the panels, how much are we deceived and could we spot the difference at all ? If the results are like with the Dell 2007 gradient samples we had a pleasure to witness, I'm really worried about the shift & prospect of the software dithering technology itself. Very worried

Very interesting. I've never heard that S-IPS panels are suffering to such extent from the overdrive. At least, no reports from the Philips 20" 200W6CS 8ms owners and that panel is on the speedy side and quite possibly S-IPS. I wonder if something else is causing the problems in Dell 2007 ?! Poor DVI, cheap DAC implementation or last minute panel spec change ?!

ps I see that article is now up on tftcentral. Very good

yep :) and note that the bit about S-IPS + Dithering had been updated as well, this had been done after i'd posted the bit above but before your reply. Great minds think alike :p

"New S-IPS panels + Overdrive = Mixed reports. No obvious issues on modern S-IPS like the Philips 200W6CS, but obvious problems suggesting 6-Bit + dithering on others (inc. the Dell 2007WFP)"

It seems that secret menu of the 2007WFP reveled that panel type is indeed S-IPS: LM201W01. It must be that it's either firmware/DAC/DVI problem as I would be hugely surprised that this is the "native" operation of this panel.

On the other hand, we have the Dell 2007FP, reported colour banding and confirmed rumour that Dell switched to PVA panel on this one, as reported by users who accessed the service menu and panel type is LTM201U1. Now, I could understand if the dithering problems are present on the PVA + overdrive model (and it may quite possibly confirm the theory from this thread subject), but on the S-PVA ?!

For the Dell 2407WFP, situation is again similar to 2007FP. S-PVA should produce the acceptable colour reproduction but there are problems on this model also.

All in all, we have rather confusing situation here. Apart from the huge & confusing let down by complete Dell range, we may start to wonder if such mess is really reflection of the issues, discussed in this thread.
