EA Gives Away Three C&C Titles

EA has the original Command & Conquer, Red Alert and Tiberian Sun (plus Firestorm) available as Freeware download. The original C&C and RA were reported as 16:10 anamorphic, while Tiberian Sun is pixel-based. Would be nice to get Detailed Reports for these. Also interested to see about Surround/Eyefinity support in Tiberian Sun.

WSGF Joins the [H]ard OCP Boycott - Don't Buy Global Agenda

The WSGF in joining in with Kyle Bennet and [H]ard OCP in their Boycott of Global Agenda. In a thread on the developer's forum (which is filled with WSGF members), the developer responded to a request for Eyefinity support with, "No, since it would give an unfair advantage." The game is Vert- without proper WS or Surround/Eyefinity support. Since the dev refuses to support us, we say don't support them with your dollars.

Update on BioShock 2 FOV - Patch Underway (Revised)

"2K Elizabeth", (Community Manager for 2K Games) forwarded me this Formal Announcement of a Hor+ Patch. To quote the page, "We always meant to have our FOV expand horizontally, but a last minute bug fix for a related issue changed this back to a vertical FOV just before ship. We feel rather silly about this, and agree that horizontal expansion is much more awesome, and that you'll have it very soon."

I've reached out separately to Elizabeth to confirm this will mean Eyefinity support, and hope to hear back soon.

BioShock 2 - BioShock FOV Problems Redux

Csokis provided some comparison shots of BioShock 2 being Vert-. Considering that we went through this exact same thing on the original BioShock (and the WSGF event made X-Play! on G4TV), the FOV issues are surprising. This thread on the 2K Forums picked up our original posting and users there go on to say that other issues fixed in patches to the original BioShock are missing as well. These are issues like the mouse acceleration and the "walk" key. Sounds like the team in 2K Marin didn't start with the patched codebase. We've also got an Eyefinity thread on the issue.

ATI Enables Proper Eyefinity "Intermediate Resolutions" in Catalyst 10.1

While beta testing some drivers for ATI I found that 5040x1050 was now selectable (rather than the previous and unusable 3840x1024) on my 3x24" Eyefnity setup (with a native res of 5760x1200). Upon asking ATI when this would be released, they informed me it had been released with Catalyst 10.1. Somehow this flew under the radar of both ATI's PR folks, and the Eyefinity users here on the WSGF.

I considered this lack of proper intermediate resolution the single greatest flaw in the initial Eyefinity release. Now that this is resolved, I will be updating my Radeon 5870 1GB Review. Now, on to getting Bezel Management.

Global Agenda - Detailed Report

fuzioninfinity provided a Detailed Report of Global Agenda. Being based on the UE3 engine (and having no custom FOV code from the developer) means it's Vert-, cripplingly so in Eyefinity and Surround.

WSGF Review - Ergotech Heavy Duty Triple Monitor Desk Stand

The fine folks at Ergotech contacted me in December about doing a review for one of their multi-monitor stands. After consulting with them, we ended up settling on the Ergotech Heavy Duty Triple Monitor Desk Stand. I've finished both the video review (posted on YouTube) and the written review. In short, the Ergotech Triple Desk Stand is a fine piece of hardware and comes highly recommended.

We've also set up a Discussion Thread where you can share your thoughts with Ergotech on what you'd like to see in a multi-monitor stand.

Avatar Gets Hor+ Patch for WS and TH/EF

scavvenjahh reports that Avatar: The Game received a widescreen and TripleHead/Eyefinity update with a recent patch. This allows for native Hor+ gameplay.

Widescreen Patch for Age of Empires 2: Conquerers

New forum member boekabart has published a widescreen patch for Age of Empires 2: Conquerers. We have been able to confirm good widescreen support with a non-stretched HUD. boekabart has confirmed dual-screen support through a horizontal span in WinXP. While we haven't yet been able to test the patch in Surround or Eyefinity, the dual-screen success gives us hope.

A number of forum members offered to make donations to boekabart for his hard work, and we are happy to help facilitate that. We will be working to add this patch to our downloads page in the coming days.

Monitor Roundup from CES 2010

There weren't many monitor announcements, as CES 2010 seems to be all about Tablets, Tegra and Netbooks (oh, my!) along with the usual assortment of iPod and iPhone accessories. There were a few monitor announcements to be had.

First, HP announced a line of "green" LCDs which feature low power, are mercury-free and utilize solid state while LEDs. HP announced the LE19f (1440x900; 19"), LA22f (1680x1050; 22"), ZR22w (1920x1080; 21.5") and ZR24w (1920x1200; 24"). All but the 19" have DisplayPort, DVI w/ HDCP and VGA. The 19" drops the DP.

Dell announced the 27" UltraSharp U2711. This is a 16:9 panel which touts a resolution of 2560x1440. Considering this has the same horizontal pixels as a 2560x1600 panel, this appears to be the 16:9 "answer" to a 16:10 30" panel. The U2710 includes HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI w/ HDCP x2, VGA, Composite and Component connections.

AMD at CES 2010

While there weren't a lot of new Eyefinity announcements at CES (something on Eyefinity6 would have been nice), it was in strong showing. AMD had a strong Eyefinity presence at CES with multiple demo rigs. They were also touting strong Eyefinity support in key titles from 2009 and 2010. Dave Baumann passed along this slide from their latest Eyefinity presentation deck, which outlines a number of those titles (Mass Effect 2 included!).

AMD did unveil the Mobility Radeon for the 5000-series. This brings DX11 and Eyefinity support to notebooks. Not sure how the EF support is going to work unless the notebooks sport multiple display outputs. Finally, AMD and Samsung demoed the new thin-bezeled SyncMaster MD230. It will come in 3x23" configuration for $1899 and 6x23" for $3099.

NVIDIA Enters Multi-Monitor Gaming with 3D Vision Surround Announcement

At CES 2010 NVIDIA announced it's foray into the multi-monitor gaming world with its announcement of "3D Vision Surround." The technology will launch alongside the Germi cards, but will work with the existing GT200 family as well. This solution allows for combined implementation of 3D, Surround and PhysX. We've set up a new section in the Multi-Monitor Gaming portion of the forum for discussion.

Massive Update to the Master Monitor List.

We just completed a massive update on the Master Monitors List. We've moved old monitors to the Retired List, and added new monitors to the MML. We are no longer creating individual pages for monitors. However we have added several new columns of data.

We now indicate HDMI and DisplayPort connectors, included speakers, VESA mounts, and which units support 57Hz refresh rate (to support the Matrox TripleHead2Go). All this is done just in time for CES, where the next crop of monitors will be announced.

Borderlands Detailed Report

Catching up on news after the holidays. StingingVelvet posted a Detailed Report for Borderlands. The game is Vert- in TripleHead/Eyefinity, though there is debate on whether the default FOV for a 16:9/10 monitor is adequate. There is a fix in place to adjust the FOV for single and multi-mon setups, but there are some anomalies with the TH/EF implementation.

WSGF Review of the Radeon 5870

Ibrin has finally been able to get his full review of the Radeon 5870 out the door. This is a follow-up to the initial Benchmarks he ran. While there are a few small things he would change to make to the Eyefinity experience even smoother, the Radeon 5870 and Eyefinity both come highly recommended. If you still can't figure out what to give your favorite gamer for Christmas, this may be the answer. ^_^

Update: Created a Discussion Thread in the Forum for this review.

Leapo has confirmed that the Penumbra Series works in Surround and Wide Surround. There is a cap of 4096 pixels wide. This means that 3840x1024 and 3840x800 both work, as well as custom resolutions with a horizontal res of 4096 or less (such as 4096x853).

Nation Red Demo is Hor+

scavvenjahh posted some screenshots for Nation Red. It works all the way through Surround (with a slight .ini tweak), with a proper HUD. Download the demo and check out the tops-down zombie shooting action.

Divinity 2 is Certified

LeeNux's first Detailed Report is for Divinity 2 – Ego Draconis, sequel to Divine Divinity. All standard widescreen resolutions are supported natively, with hor + gameplay, and no known flaws, making this game Certified.

Scrapland Gets a Solution

Tanuki has developed a widescreen solution for Scrapland. It works all the way through Surround, but stretches the HUD. The stretch isn't so bad in widescreen, but looks fairly annoying in TripleHead. After a bit more testing he will have it ready for posting.

Blueberry Garden - Grade B

Cranky posted a Detailed Report for Blueberry Garden. The game is Pixel-based, meaning that both the horizontal FOV and vertical FOV are tied directly to the number of pixels. 1280x800 and 1680x1050 both provide the same aspect ratio, but 1680x1050 allows you to see more in both directions.

The game offers native support up to 1680x1050, and an .ini solution allows for larger resolutions and custom resolutions. Cranky finds that the game becomes difficult to play above 1680x1050, so leaving it with the natively supported resolutions may be best. Great job by indie developer Erik Svedäng in supporting widescreen.

East India Company Hor+ WS, Mixed TH Support

scavvenjahh posted some comparison screenshots for the new East India Company Demo. The game offers Hor+ support for widescreen, with a proper HUD. The TripleHead support is a mixed bag. The world map is Hor+, but pillarboxes to 16:10 widescreen. The battle screens do support a proper Hor+ Wide Surround.

Batman: Arkham Asylum Detailed Report and Benchmarks

I put together a Detailed Report on the new Batman demo. It is Hor+ with solid support for TH and WTH. There is an issue in Surround where the "cinematic" action sequences are zoomed in too far, making them Vert-. Paddy found a work-around, that can hopefully be added into the final product before shipping. He also set up a "Thank You" thread over on the Eidos forums for their great support of TripleHead and the PC platform in general. Stop by it if you can.

Finally, I put the game through its paces in a series of benchmarks in 18 different quality, AA and PhysX combinations at 5040x1050. I also tested max settings from 1680x1050 through 5040x1050.

Huxley is Vert-

Ibrin checked out the Open Beta for Huxley. The game offers full resolution support, all the way to 5040x1050. Unfortunately it is Vert-. TripleHead is unplayable and has a stretched HUD.

Benchmarks for GTX 1792MB SLI in WS and WTH

Thanks to the fine folks at EVGA, I've been able to continue our benchmark suite of the NVIDIA 200-series. This round adds the GTX 275 1792MB in SLI. I've added a link in the left nav to our new WS and WTH Benchmarking Index. Feel free to hit this forum thread to discuss any of the benchmarks.

Unique Dual Widescreen Monitor from EVGA

EVGA has released an interesting dual widescreen monitor called the InterView. It is dual 17" widescreens at 1440x900 each. The unique feature is that both displays rotate front-to-back, so that people on opposite sides of a desk can view the same image (with the displays set to mirror mode).

This doesn't have many applications for gaming, due to the low resolution and lack of support for "dual displays" in games. But, it does offer unique productivity opportunities.

WSGF Mumble Server

CrackerJackMack has gone above and beyond for the WSGF again by setting up a Mumble Voice Chat Server. Mumble is Open Source and allows the WSGF to run a server without worrying about license fees and cost.

This will allow forum members to chat at their leisure, or while playing a game. The Mumble Server queries the forum user database, so there is nothing new to sign up for. Just log in with your forum ID and password. Cynagen has posted a "How-To" on getting set up on the server (the above link).

Trine Detailed Report - Grade B

I missed it a few days ago, but X-Warrior posted a Detailed Report for Trine. The game is Hor+, with some minor HUD stretching. It also has an .ini file for custom resolutions and TripleHead. While not perfect WS and TH support, overall a very solid showing.

Lobbying Central

I created a new area in the Surround Forums called Lobbying Central. Previously the WSGF has been successful in lobbying developers to add Surround support, both before and after a release. The purpose of this new forum is to collect all of these threads, so that we can coordinate our efforts and keep tabs on Surround support.
