Previous Updates at the WSGF

Splinter Cell: Conviction - Possibly Certified

A number of updates on Splinter Cell: Conviction. Somehow I missed getting it in the news feed, but the v1.03 patch from a couple of months ago expanded mutli-monitor support beyond Eyefinity. Multi-monitor now works on TH2Go, SoftTH and NVIDIA 3DVS.

Scavvenjahh has posted a new Detailed Report based on the v1.04 patch. The game is anamorphic in 16:10 (with a 16:9 baseline), but goes Hor+ for multi-monitor. Users running three 4:3 or 5:4 monitors will need to manually edit a config file. Should still end up Certified.

Just Cause 2 Updated with Eyefinity Fix

Tripplehammer posted that Eidos has posted patch v1.0.2 for Just Cause 2. The release notes state "Fix to display quicktime prompts correctly when running in Eyefinity mode." We don't have any other confirmation or screenshots. Also need to know if fix is for all multi-monitor technologies, or just Eyefinity

Rage of Mages 2: Necromancer Detailed Report - Pixel Based

xidus posted a Detailed Report for Rage of Mages 2: Necromancer. This older title offers pixel based support (e.g., the higher your res, the more you see) with a simple edit to the shortcut. The HUD scales properly, and Faux Surround has been tested.

ATI Catalyst 10.7 & 10.7a Hotfix Drivers

ATI released Catalyst 10.7, which includes CFX Support for 3x1-Portrait EF, as well as Linux support. Hot on the heels of that release, ATI released the Catalyst 10.7a HotFix which offers improvements for QuadFire, and adds AA support to StarCraft II.

Still no 5x1-Portrait support. We've seen it recently in the wild, and hopefully the 3x1-P CFX and QuadFire improvements are steps on the road to 5x1-P support.

Mafia: Vert- in WS, but Hor+ in Multi-Monitor w/ Centered HUD

More latent updates. scavvenjahh posted widescreen updates for PoP and Bioshock 2 (to correspond with the multi-monitor updates). While waiting for Mafia II, thales100 also posted an Confirmed Solution for the original Mafia. It's is Vert- is "normal" widescreen, but is Hor+ in multi-monitor with a centered HUD. Nice surprise indeed.

4x Multi-Monitor Solutions

Last week scavvenjahh posted for Hor+ multi-monitor solutions for Price of Persia (native), Bioshock 2 (patch), Splinter Cell: Double Agent (.ini) and Tomb Raider: Underworld (edit). Check out the Multi-Monitor Solutions Forum for more details. Thanks to scavvenjah for his continued support in providing these updates.

ATI Talks Open-Source 3D

Shane Parfitt and Terry Makedon from ATI (two people actually in my email Roledex ^_^) talk about Open Source 3D from ATI. Leveraging HDMI 1.4a and DisplayPort 1.2, ATI expects to have Open Source 3D support out by Christmas.

Napoleon: Total War - Grade B

scavvenjahh posted a Detailed Report for Napoleon: Total War. The game is natively Hor+ in both Widescreen and Eyefinity/Surround. The FMV cut-scenes stretch in anything other than 16:9 (including 16:10). At 4:3 and 5:4 the FMVs become anamorphic. There are some other tiny issues in multi-monitor, which are discussed in the DR.

Radeon HD Reviews - CrossFireX Benchmarking

I've just posted what will probably be my last set of benchmarks on the 5000-series (until ATI releases new hardware or the 5x1-P driver). I've posted a review of the Radeon HD 5870 E6, 5870, 5850 and 5770 - all in CFX.

Benchmarks run across seven games, in both widescreen and Eyefinity. I've posted the raw scores, along with analysis on the percent improvements across the product segments and environments.
--Ibrin 22:20, 18 Jul 2010 (UTC)

Splinter Cell: Double Agent - Surround/Eyefinity Support

tricky updated the Detailed Report for Splinter Cell: Double Agent. Using the existing .ini solution for widescreen, the game support multi-monitor. The solution was tested on NV3DS. Eyefinity support should work the same. HUD and movies stretch across the screens, but the game is proper Hor+.

NVIDIA Releases WHQL-Candidate Drivers for 3DVS

NVIDIA has released their WHQL-Candidate driver (v. 258.96) for 3D Vision Surround. You can grab all the details at NVIDIA's blog. Along with WHQL candidacy, the drivers also bring performance increases to a number of games and support for the new GTX460. Update: Corrected post to indicate WHQL candidacy, not WHQL certification.

Metro 2033 - Detailed Report

scavvenjahh posted a Detailed Report for Metro 2033. The game is natively Hor+ in both Widescreen and Eyefinity/Surround. It does have an editable FOV, which you can adjust to suit your preferences. The HUD is centered in multi-monitor configurations. One note is that the horizontal movement of the mouse is slightly accelerated, based on your horizontal resolution.

Multi-Monitor Independence

This past weekend marked the American Independence Day. I found it fitting that Independence Day was the first weekend after NVIDIA released their 3D Vision Surround drivers - an act which brings real competition to the multi-monitor scene.

Where you bleed red or green (much like whether you bleed red or blue in American politics), competition is good for multi-monitor users. Our only concern is games that support one technology and not the other - but the WSGF is here to ensure that doesn't happen.

The WSGF is still waiting on evaluation hardware from NVIDIA, but we do have users providing their experiences with 3DVS with GTX480 in Tri-SLI, GTX470 in SLI and GTX285 in SLI. And, don't forget our existing Eyefinity Forums as well.

NVIDIA Releases Beta 3D Vision Surround Drivers

NVIDIA has released beta drivers for 3D Vision Surround. You can grab all the details in this forum thread. The WHQL drivers are expected to be released in about two weeks. We don't yet have evaluation hardware, but you can read some user experiences in the 3D Vision Surround Forum.

Radeon HD Reviews - 5770, 5750, 5670, 5550 & 5450

I've just posted two sets of reviews on ATI Radeon HD cards. The two reviews cover the "Performance" Segment (5770 & 5750) and the "Mainstream" Segment (5670, 5550 & 5450).

The Radeon HD 5770 is a mid-range offering that ends up being the "tipping point" in the 5000-series product line. It is a solid performer in single-screen environments, and offers the option to try Eyefinity without a large investment in GPU or PSU. Also, it could provide an Eyefinity solution if your primary interest is older titles or games based on the Valve Source Engine (HL2, TF2 and L4D).

Cards below the 5700-series aren't feasible for Eyefinity, or any strenuous gaming on a single screen. There are great options for an HTPC or a low-power SFF PC that is hooked to an HDTV. Again, it assumes the gaming is on older titles, or games at lower quality settings.

Tomb Raider Underworld - Eyefinity Fix

GeneralAdmission posted an update to the Detailed Report for Tomb Raider Underworld. The update outlines a fix the stretching in Eyefinity and TH2Go.

WSGF Source Engine HUD Editor Updated

Delphium has updated the Source HUD Editor. The FOV calculation section now provides an overlay of the HUD, so that you can see how the game will look with the updated HUD. Additionally, he has added options to support proper HUD placement on Portrait monitor configurations

Another million thanks to Delphium for his hard work on this, and for bringing this tool to the WSGF audience.

Duke Nuken 3D - Detailed Report

The_cranky_hermit posted a Detailed Report for Duke Nukem 3D, using the eDuke32 port. The game is Hor+ in WS and multi-monitor. The automap only behaves properly in 16:10. In all other aspects (including 4:3 and 16:9), the map distorts as it rotates. The effect is pretty severe and does make a noticeable impact on gameplay.
--Ibrin 01:23, 20 June 2010 (UTC)

Alpha Protocol - Detailed Report

A week ago yagibbear posted a Detailed Report for Alpha Protocol. The DR is fully completed with regard to multi-monitor, but we do know that the game is Vert- is widescreen with anamorphic cut-scenes. The game sports a proper HUD, which does not stretch. The game is slightly Vert- and vastly Hor+ in Eyefinity, though we don't yet have info on the cut-scenes.
--Ibrin 10:31, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

Winterbottom in Widescreen

scavvenjahh posted a Detailed Report for The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom. This indie title is hard-coded for 16:9 anamorphic. It letterboxes in 4:3 and 16:10, but goes Vert- in TripleHead and Eyefinity. Given the constrained playfield and puzzle nature of the game, this isn't completely surpising. It would have been nice to see it pillarboxed with a themed background in the wider aspects.
--Ibrin 16:02, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

Darkness Within 2 - Detailed Report

scavvenjahh posted a Detailed Report for Darkness Within 2: Dark Lineage. This indie title is a point-and-click adventure in the horror genre. The game requires an .ini solution for widescreen and Eyefinity. You will need to set both the horizontal and vertical dimensions, along with the aspect ratio. The game is Hor+, but has some 2D elements that are stretched. Grade B overall.

Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands - Eyefinity and TripleHead Support

thales100 posted TripleHead screenshots for Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands. The developer already confirmed Eyefinity specific support, and it is great to see the TripleHead2Go support as well
--Ibrin 19:27, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

WSGF Source Engine HUD Editor

Delphium has updated the FOV Calc to include a HUD editor for games based on the Source engine. The editor pulls your FOV and bezel information from the FOV Calculator. It then allows you to upload game-specifc HUD files, automatically applies the changes to the unique fields in the configuration file, and then allows you to download the updated file.

The editor supports Counter Strike: Source, Day of Defeat: Source, Left4Dead, Left4Dead2, and Team Fortress 2. A million thanks to Delphium for his hard work on this, and for bringing this tool to the WSGF audience.
--Ibrin 11:39, 08 Jun 2010 (UTC)

Damnation - Detailed Report

scavvenjahh posted a Detailed Report for Damnation. This UE3 game is Vert- out of the box (no surprise). There are plenty of tweaks in the .ini file, or you can download the Camera Fix File.

With the edits, the game produces Hor+ gameplay in WS and EF, though there is some Vert- instances in the "bike riding" segments.. Cut-scenes are anamorphic.
--Ibrin 11:39, 06 Jun 2010 (UTC)

Bob Came in Pieces - Detailed Report

scavvenjahh posted a Detailed Report for Bob Came in Pieces. The game has native Hor+ in WS, but has no TH/EF support. The 3D physics-based platformer is from indie developer Ludosity.
--Ibrin 12:52, 04 Jun 2010 (UTC)

Hegemony: Philip of Macedon - Detailed Report

scavvenjahh posted a Detailed Report for Hegemony: Philip of Macedon. The game has native Hor+ WS and TH/EF support. Gameplay is Hor+ for gameplay and in-game cutscenes. FMVs are anamorphic in WS and Vert- in TH/EF (though you can still read subtitles.. That one piece might keep it from certification, but overall very solid.

This RTS is developed and sold digitally by Longbow Games. The full game is $30, and scavvenjahh calls it, "A budget game done right." There is a demo you can try as well. Go give this indie developer a look if only for their solid support for multi-monitor.
--Ibrin 11:22, 02 Jun 2010 (UTC)

Blur - Detailed Report

Skid posted a Detailed Report for Blur. The game has native Hor+ WS and TH/EF support. Gameplay is Hor+, however menus and pre-rendered videos are Vert-. The menus are still usable, and everything in the game is accessible. Not perfect, but usable.
--Ibrin 08:11, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Just Cause 2 - Detailed Report

scavvenjahh posted a Detailed Report for Just Cause 2. The game has native Hor+ WS and TH/EF support. There is an issue with the QTE prompts in triple-wide. Paddy figured out a work-around, and the details are posted in the DR. Final grade is still pending, but is a solid title for WS and TH/EF users.

WSGF Lobbying - Eyefinity Support for The Witcher

This week's Lobbying efforts are for The Witcher & The Witcher 2. The original title supported multi-monitor resolutions and aspects, but the cut-scenes were broken. This is disappointing considering the literary backbone of the game. There was a work around to use "Low" Light Quality settings. While not optimal, it was better than nothing.

I have started lobbying for full support in The Witcher 2, and a patch for the original Witcher. I have already posted messages to the Twitter Feed and Facebook Pages for the game. Additionally, I've posted a message on the Witcher Community Forum. I've placed my tweets and posts in the WSGF Witcher Lobbying Thread as an example.

Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands Info

Our friends over at PC Games Hardware posted an interview with Alain Dessureaux, the lead programmer for the upcoming Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands. In the interview Alain confirmed support for Eyefinity and 6-core processors.

This is certainly welcome news for both users who have invested in multi-monitor setups, and those who have invested in 4-core and 6-core processors.

Dell Releases Two New DisplayPort Monitors in its U-Series

Saw a post at Engadget over the weekend, outlining two new monitors in the Dell U-Series. Both models are 1920x1080, with IPS panels and DisplayPort connectors. Considering the existing offers from HP that are 1080p IPS with DisplayPort, there are now more choices than ever for higher quality panels that support Eyefinity.

I've been working with a TN set of panels in 5x1-P, and I can say that if you are looking to go Portrait mode an IPS panel is worth the investment. I'm working to outline the performance differences between TN and IPS in a future video. But in the meantime, IPS continues to get more accessible thanks to HP and Dell.

Diablo II Detailed Report

The_Cranky_Hermit posted a Detailed Report for Diablo II. As usual the DR looks at the HUD, menu and cut-scenes. Being that the game is pixel-based, the HUD and menu maintain their original size.

The game does support custom resolutions and aspects (including TH2Go and Eyefinity). However, Cranky finds that the game becomes difficult to play above 1680x1050. This may limit the appeal to multi-monitor environments.

Splinter Cell: Conviction gets Eyefinity Support - But No TH2Go Support

Ubisoft announced that patch v1.02 added Eyefinity support. However, thales100 finds that TH2Go is not supported. While the WSGF is happy to see Ubisoft support Eyefinity in such a key title, we do hope that they will support other multi-monitor environments as well.

ATI has always maintained that they have no design to force "Eyefinity only" designs or lock out other solutions. Their goal is to expand the multi-monitor environment, and work to provide the best experience. Members have posted on the Ubisoft forum. I have reached out to ATI, and they are looking into the issue as well.

WSGF Lobbying - Eyefinity Support for Darksiders

We're kicking off our efforts with Darksiders. Darksiders is unique in that the developers have stated they want to embrace "user-defined resolutions" available on the PC platform. We're trying to figure out if that means Eyefinity and Surround support.

I have already posted messages to the Twitter Feed and Facebook Pages for the game. Additionally, I've posted a message on the Darksiders Community Forum. I've placed my tweets and posts in the WSGF Darksiders Lobbying Thread as an example.

WSGF Launches Weekly Lobbying Efforts for Eyefinity & Surround Support

The WSGF is working to formalize our lobbying efforts, to encourage support for Eyefinity and Surround Gaming. Even if you aren't an Eyefinity or Surround user, proper support of these environments will ensure proper support for widescreen users.

I am hoping to coordinate a lobbying effort for a new game each week. If you'd like to be informed of the lobbying efforts each week, please sign up for the Lobbying User Group in the forum.

Killer App Mod for Tron 2.0 - Hor+ w/ Eyefinity Support

Forum member redrain85 created the Tron 2.0 mod Killer App. The mod provides a whole host of improvements to Tron 2.0, but of particular interest to the WSGF is native Hor+ support and support for Eyefinity.

Check out this discussion thread to see some screenshots and chat with redrain85. Fortunately, it looks like his methodology will also be applicable to other Lithtech 2.5 engine games such as NOLF 1 & 2.

Deus Ex in Eyefinity - YouTube Video of Opening Cinematic in 720p HD

Thanks to a new DX10 renderer, Deus Ex is now Hor+ with support for Eyefinity and Surround Gaming. Thanks to Mobster007 we have a YouTube Video comparing the opening cinematic in 1280x1024 and 3840x1024. You can discuss the new renderer in the Deus Ex Detailed Report.

What many consider to be the greatest PC game of all time now running in Eyefinity? I think it's time for me to finally play it...

Radeon HD 5850 & HD 5830 - WSGF Review

I have published a review of the ATI Radeon HD 5850 and the HD 5830. These cards complete what ATI considers its "Enthusiast" product segment. I test them in both widescreen (1680x1050 and 1920x1200) and Eyefinity (5040x1050 and 5760x1200). Stats from the HD 5870 and HD 5770 are also included to help provide context for the 5850 and 5830 scores.

Check out the review to see how the cards fare in normal widescreen usage, and see if they can truly support an Eyefinity setup. When you done, come back to this discussion thread.

Godfather II - Native Hor+ w/ Eyefinity Support

scavvenjahh some screenshots for Godfather II. The game is Hor+ in widescreen and Eyefinity, with native support selectable through the options menu. In Eyefinity the HUD spans all three screens. The real-time cutscenes are Vert-, and interactive dialogue scenes are off-center. Not perfect support, but these anomalies have minimal impact on overall gameplay.
--Ibrin 19:46, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

Graveyard is Hor+ through Eyefinity

Mobster007 posted screenshots for Graveyard. The "game" is an indie title from Tale of Tales (who are also responsible for "The Path") which uses the Unity Engine. It is nice to see a new engine have Hor+ behavior. Also, it's nice to see an indie developer truly step out and do something unique.

New OpenSearch Plug-in for IE8 & FireFox

Forum member Delphium is at it again. This time he put together a search plug-in so that you can search the WSGF Wiki and phpBB3 forum all at once. To install it, click the link in the left nav.

The plug-in is built on the OpenSearch platform, so it can be installed in both IE8 and FireFox. The plug-in uses Google to perform the search, and returns all relevant pages it has crawled.

While the phpBB3 advanced offers greater search capability within the forum, the new plug-in allows you to pull all the WSGF information into one search query. Thanks again to Delphium for putting this together. Enjoy!

Majesty 2 and Settler's 7 are Hor+; Tropico 3 is Vert-

A couple of weeks ago Scavvenjahh posted screenshots for Settlers 7, Majesty 2 and Tropico 3. Both Settlers 7 and Majesty 2 are Hor+ through TH/EF. However, Settlers requires 60Hz at 5040x1050 which limits its TripleHead2Go usability. Tropico 3 is Vert-.
