Game Information

By: Turbine, Microsoft
Genre: Fantasy, MMORPG
Release Date: December 1, 1999
Players: 1
Version: I tested this with the retail version of AC:TOD, September 2006 patch. Earlier versions of the client may also have worked, but as this is an MMO game, the client is updated on a regular basis. Subsequent patches aren't expected to disrupt the use of widescreen resolutions.

Asheron's Call is a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game. The original Asheron's Call release was in November 1999, followed by an expansion pack in 2001 (AC: Dark Majesty), and most recently in 2005 (AC: Throne of Destiny).

While players aren't required to purchase the latest expansion pack, players are required to install the graphics update that shipped after this expansion. This graphics update included support for DirectX 9.0 and more flexible monitor resolutions.

Widescreen Support

Method

The game natively supports widescreen resolutions. The image essentially zooms though, necessitating a change to the field of view setting. There is a 'Field of View' slider on the Config tab, though no precise % is given.

To widen the onscreen image using a precise setting, navigate to and open the following file:
My Documents\Asheron's Call\UserPreferences.ini

Under the file's RENDER section, change the following value from its default:
FieldOfView=90.00

16:10 display suggested value: 100.39
16:9 display suggested value: 106.27

Screen change

Known Issues

The 2D character creation and selection screens are stretched. The in-game 2D UI (inventory, spell bars, chat windows, radar, map, config, etc) are displayed correctly at all resolutions. The wider screen allows more spell icons to be displayed on the spell bars, the default chat window to widen, and the vitals bars at the top of the screen to display at a finer granularity.
