A first person shooter is, literally, a game that takes place mostly in the first person point of view, meaning that the screen directly simulates the protagonist's vision, and has gameplay that revolves around fighting enemies, usually with firearms.

Formally, first person shooter implies a more specific type of gameplay, as many games that fit the literal definition, such as combat flight simulators, rail shooters, and lightgun games, are usually not considered to be first person shooters. First person shooters typically have the player control a human being, armed with an array of handheld firearms that can be aimed with pixel precision, and have a 3D game world with foes who will try to kill or incapacitate the protagonist.
