Definition

The HUD, or heads-up-display, refers to the collective of visible HUD elements at any given moment. A HUD element is any 2D graphical object on the screen that is not part of the game world and is not interactive, and whose purpose is to display data or information that is important to the player. Common HUD elements in action games include health indicators, ammo counts, and targeting reticules. Common HUD elements in other genres, especially strategy games, include resource counts, non-interactive control panel components, mini-maps, selection boxes, and the cursor. HUD elements can also include context-sensitive information such as tutorial notices and subtitles.

If a game has HUD stretch, it means that some or all of the HUD elements are stretched horizontally when widescreen resolutions are used.

Examples

Call of Duty, like most games with the Quake III engine, has a stretched HUD in widescreen mode. This is easiest to tell by looking at the oval-shaped compass in the widescreen shot.
