In-Game Detailed Measurement Tools
Although many games will auto sense, recommend settings based on your hardware configuration, In-Game features test your PC & settings to provide feedback for your best PC calibration & tweaking. They are also useful to see (where available) if a given game will run on your system or how well.
F.E.A.R. (full version) in the Options > Performance menu press "Test Settings" Will give very detailed FPS & a handy FPS Distribution chart.
HL2, Doom3 or Far-Cry consols can be used to give real time FPS benchmarks.
3rd Party Out-Of-Game Tools
These are applications that are started before the game is run, then record performance while the games are being played to be reviewed after.

PerformanceTest V6.0 (FREE & TRIAL)
